Claire Mazur, Mama to Cam and Co-creator & Host of A Thing or Two Newsletter & Podcast Shares Her Brooklyn City Guide

I’m honored to chat with Claire Mazur, the inspiring and innovative mama and entrepreneur who is always a couple of steps ahead of the curve. Claire co-founded the beloved e-commerce site Of a Kind in 2010 with her college friend and work wife, Erica Cerulo. The two went on to release their first book, Work Wife: The Power of Female Friendship to Drive Successful Businesses, a refreshing read on the unique power of female friendship to fuel successful businesses. Now, they partner on their popular A Thing or Two newsletter and podcast – all about the stuff they think more people should know about.

Read on for Claire’s favorite places to eat, shop, stay and hang with her husband and babe in Brooklyn City.

Best places to eat (including some kid friendly):

My daily cravings alternate between the vegan platter at Pilar Cuban Eatery and the chilaquiles at Cafe Calaca, both supremely laid-back spots that tolerate a toddler well. The Fly specializes in rotisserie chicken, fries, and natural wine and is a total toddler-fest during the 5:30 dinner shift. My husband’s favorite is Chuko for their ramen, and our three-year-old is always happy to oblige because he loves the okonomiyaki-style tater tots. For date night without the kid, we head to Hart’s for their clam toast and other Mediterranean-inspired dishes that earn them all the accolades.

Best places to shop for mom and bebe?

Thank You Have a Good Day has great women’s vintage, and Camp is a really, really fun toy store that will occupy your kid for hours.

Best places to enjoy nature with kids?

Prospect Park is our main hang, but I do miss living in Dumbo and getting to run along Brooklyn Bridge Park—truly one of the most spectacular places in the city, especially at sunset. During the early days of the pandemic when we wanted to avoid crowds, we did a lot of exploring of Highland Park, which I’d never been to despite having spent over a decade in the city.

Best places to enjoy art?

We feel so lucky to live so close to Brooklyn Museum. They’ve got the Virgil Abloh exhibit up now. Land Gallery, featuring the work of artists with developmental disabilities, is also great.

Best places to stay?

I’m not an expert in this because we haven’t stayed in a lot of hotels in Brooklyn, but we did do a night at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge for my birthday one year and I absolutely loved it. Feels fun and romantic and it’s a gorgeous location on the water.
